Each word has been removed from a handwritten letter Ulysses Grant sent to President Chester Arthur in 1881. The letter provides an introduction for three men from Mississippi to talk to President Arthur regarding "Mississippi affairs". President James Garfield was assassinated just 5 months earlier, and upon his death in September Arthur assumed the Presidency. This letter was received by Arthur in his first 100 days as President.
The cost of authenticating a single word of Grant's handwriting is $100 on Beckett's website.
