Each encapsulated word was individually removed from Lee’s letter to his solicitor seeking to sell certain household items. At the time, the 28 year old Lee was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, leading an extended survey establishing the contested boundary line between Ohio and Michigan.
